Layered Green Roof System
Achieve stormwater control, energy savings, and architectural elegance in one system.
GreenGrid® modular systems are a proven solution for many green roof applications, offering efficiency, ease of installation, and reliable performance. However, certain project requirements call for a more tailored approach. Layered green roof systems are an excellent option when a project demands greater flexibility in design, such as accommodating unique roof shapes, varying slopes, or custom soil depths. They are also well-suited for installations where the plant palette or stormwater management goals require precise control over each system component.
Layered systems can be equally advantageous for projects with complex architectural features, or when site conditions evolve during design and consultation. Their built-in-place nature allows for seamless integration with specialized accessories and supports a wide range of planting schemes—from sedum groundcovers to turfgrass and small shrubs. Some clients even choose to incorporate both modular and layered systems on the same building.
By offering both modular and layered solutions, GreenGrid® ensures that every client receives the best fit for their vision, performance goals, and site-specific needs.
Layered System Components
Vegetation – select from sedum tiles or mats, herbaceous perennials and ornamental grasses in various plug and pot sizes
Media – select from various regional blends meeting project weight and other performance requirements
Drainage Layer – select from 8 different options that offer a wide array of price points, flow rates, water storage, moisture retention, and height
Needled Mineral Wool (optional) – 1” thick rolls for maximum water storage where necessary
Root Barrier (optional) – select from 3 different thicknesses typically utilized with non-sedum plantings
Design Elements
- Customizable Depths & Layouts:
Select from standard increments (4”, 6”, 8”, or Deep Intensive >8”) to meet your project’s stormwater, plant palette, and structural requirements. - Flexible Installation:
Layers are easily cut and shaped on-site, accommodating curves, angles, and unique roof geometries. - Accessory Compatibility:
Integrates with GreenGrid® accessories including edging, mineral wool water retention layers, and hardscapes. - Plant Palette Diversity:
Supports sedum, perennials, ornamental grasses, turfgrass, and small shrubs—allowing for custom planting layouts and landscape design. We can provide your plants along with the other system components. - Irrigation Integration:
Compatible with dedicated irrigation systems, recommended for non-succulent plantings and projects in arid or semi-arid climates.
Performance Outcomes
Like our modular systems, the performance outcomes of a layered system are similar, and often include:
- Deliver maximum benefits with strong value
- Meet performance, regulatory, or incentive requirements.
- Enhance building’s appearance, energy efficiency, and environmental impact.
- Support on-site stormwater management.
- Contribute to energy conservation through active cooling during summer months and thermal mass during winter months
- Help meet code or local ordinance requirements for green roof coverage.
- Enable eligibility for incentive programs and tax credits.
- Contribute to local sustainability requirements.
- Support LEED® credit compliance.
- Extend the lifespan of the roof
- Create beautiful, accessible spaces
