GreenGrid® Vegetative Green Roof Systems

Installation

The GreenGrid® roof system, designed by horticulture and roofing experts, boasts an innovative, contractor-friendly design making it quick and easy to install. Based on over a decade of experience, our installation guide highlights best practices, quality standards, and key considerations for different roofs and climates.

Maintenance

A vegetative green roof is an ecological system that requires regular maintenance to ensure its longevity and performance. Protect your investment by following a simple preventative maintenance schedule, which includes weeding, fertilizing, trimming, replanting as-needed, supplemental watering (if not irrigated), replacing eroded media, and treating for pests.

System Features

Truly Modular with Zero-Edge

Unlike layered and hybrid systems, GreenGrid® modules are typically pre-grown and remain modular before, during, and after installation. The modules can be lifted, moved, rearranged, or even completely removed and reinstalled without compromising the integrity of the green roof system, or causing loose media, or creating cumbersome edging. The building owner has easy access to the waterproofing system after installation with straightforward maintenance and repair. GreenGrid’s® zero-edge design minimizes module lines, enhancing the beauty of the green roof, even when it lies dormant.

Regional Sourcing and Custom Planting Mixes

Unlike other green roof suppliers, GreenGrid® modules are pre-grown in multiple locations around the country. Having a regional network of suppliers reduces freight costs, allows you to purchase customized plants and/or media, and improves the overall sustainability of the system. We can provide you with our default plant mixes that meet various performance or aesthetic requirements, incorporate accents into those mixes, or we can help customize your planting palette based on your budget, needs, preferences, and climate.

Customized Modules

Customization is simple. GreenGrid® modules can be cut to any shape or size you want to fit odd dimensions, angles, or arches. We will grow and deliver enough plants for your total space and include extra empty modules as part of the package. During installation, the empty modules will be cut to fit, and soil and plants transplanted into that custom shaped space, and then an edge treatment applied to the open side of the cut module. As the manufacturer of the GreenGrid®, we can also produce custom designed modules that meet alternate project specifications. However, this option is only cost-effective for large projects where mold costs can be spread over many square feet. This is a unique offer not available from other companies in the industry.

System Benefits

Energy Efficient and Cost Effective

Not all green roof systems are the same. The GreenGrid® system, backed by solid data and third-party research, has proven to have effective R-values as high as R-100 and low heat transfer rates compared to both black and white colored roofs. As a result, when strategically located and configured, the GreenGrid® system can help save energy for space conditioning especially for buildings 4 stories or less. Plus, GreenGrid® protects the roof, extending roof life by 100% or greater, resulting in significant lifecycle cost savings.

Storm Water Management

As a Low Impact Development Best Management Practice (BMP), GreenGrid® is the perfect solution to meeting various stormwater requirements because green roofs retain and detain water. Studies conducted by the University of Connecticut and Columbia University showed that GreenGrid® retained 50-61% of annual precipitation over the course of 1 year, while also retaining 100% of the precipitation from the majority of individual storm events. Most importantly, the GreenGrid® system can provide stormwater management at one of the lowest costs per gallon of any BMP at $0.02-$0.06 per gallon per year.

Aesthetic Appeal and Amenity Spaces

GreenGrid®’s multiple depth options can be easily mixed and matched, in 2’ x 2’ standard dimensions, and integrated seamlessly with rooftop hardscapes like concrete or wood pavers, and among shrubs and trees growing in large planters to achieve a ‘million dollar look’ at a fraction of the cost of other systems and construction methods. For example, at the Atlantic Wharf in Boston, their extensive sedum system blossomed into a rooftop masterpiece for under $2 per square foot by using a mix of sedum in 4” modules and ornamental grasses in 8” modules, along with river stone, concrete pavers, and Ipé wood pavers.

Design Considerations

Wind Protection

Our GreenGrid® experts can provide technical design assistance so that your modules survive high winds and meet guidance for wind design standards and recommendations. We understand that the building’s location, height, parapet, exposure, wind speeds, roof slope, and terrain, as well as the type of vegetative system and assembly are unique to every site. We will help you navigate ANSI/SPRI RP-14 Design Guide standards and advise on strategically placing modules in the field zone of the roof, and avoiding vulnerable corners and perimeter, which are prone to damage from wind uplift. Pre-planted connected modules offer the best defense against wind damage, ensuring your rooftop thrives under windy conditions.

Waterproofing

With GreenGrid®, you can transform your low-slope roof into a stunning green oasis that is compatible with most brands and types of waterproofing systems, such as single-ply membranes, fluid applied systems, and built-up roofing. And because of the modularity and flexibility of the design, GreenGrid® also allows for easy future maintenance and repairs. By following the simple instructions from your chosen waterproofing provider, you will enjoy a leak-free green roof that lasts for years. GreenGrid® can be included in single-source packages with multiple waterproofing manufacturers as well.

Irrigation

GreenGrid® systems can adapt to different climates, plants, and irrigation needs and are compatible with most low slope waterproofing systems, accommodating hidden irrigation lines beneath and between the modules. Depending on the plant selection, most systems do not require permanent irrigation, but it is advisable to have a backup system for dry or hot periods. However, where larger perennial plants and ornamental grasses are used or in particularly hot/dry climates, permanent irrigation is recommended.
