Project Narrative: In
an effort to increase environmentally friendly
housing developments on the City of Chicago’s
Southwest Side, Mayor Richard M. Daley, as
part of the city’s Historic Chicago Bungalow
Association initiative, unveiled four newly
renovated “green” bungalows in
June 2002. Each of the four model bungalows,
located on the 6400 block of South Fairfield
Avenue, have been renovated to reflect innovative,
energy-efficient, green technologies that can
be applied to buildings and homes throughout
the city. One such innovative green technology,
the GreenGrid® green
roofing system developed by Weston Solutions,
Inc. (WESTON®)
in conjunction with ABC Supply Company, Inc.,
was installed on one of the model homes.
The decision to install a green roof on a bungalow had been suspended due to the very high price the developers received for a traditional green roof. WESTON was able to offer the clients the GreenGrid® system for 1/8 the cost of the other proposal. In addition, time was very short for completion of the structure and installation of the GreenGrid®. The garage was completed on Monday, the GreenGrid® was installed on Tuesday, and the Grand Opening Tour was held on Wednesday, demonstrating that the GreenGrid® system can be installed very quickly and provide an “instant green roof.” |
