Client: Northwestern Memorial Hospital
Location: Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Chicago, IL
GreenGrid® Size: 1,440 ft2
Contractor: WESTON
Landscape Design: WESTON
Rooftop System: Extensive
Status: Completed Summer 2004
Project Narrative: This
first green roof for the Northwestern Memorial
Hospital served as a pilot for the green roof
planned for its currently-under-construction
Prentice Women’s Hospital. This small
1,440 ft2 pilot
green roof was designed to show the functionality
of the GreenGrid® system
and to complement the Olson Pavilion, one of
Northwestern Memorial’s recently renovated
structures. The green roof was composed of
180 Extensive (2’ x 4’ x 4”)
GreenGrid® modules
and was installed using the building’s
freight elevator in two days. The GreenGrid® Extensive
modules were planted with three individual
patterns and assembled according to the landscape
design resembling a meandering stream of green
and red. Mix One included the following
species: Festuca glauca ‘Elijah Blue,’ Sedum
kamtschaticum, and Sedum album; Mix Two
contains Sedum acre, Sedum album, Sedum ‘Bailey’s
Gold,’ and Sempervivum ‘Purpurcum;’ and
Mix Three contains Sedum rupestre ‘Forsteranum,’ Sedum
kamtschaticum, and Sedum spurium ‘Dragon’s
Blood.’ Mixes One and Three represent
the banks of the river and Mix Two represents
the meandering river. The photos were taken
shortly after installation was completed. |
