Why GreenGrid

The “new” GreenGrid modular vegetative green roof system continues to offer the distinct advantages it is known for such as simplicity of design, flexibility, and fully modular features. These have been hallmarks of the GreenGrid system since 2001. However, we recognize the continuous need for change to meet new challenges as the very dynamic green building industry continues to grow and change.

True Modularity

Unlike layered-style and hybrid systems, GreenGrid modules remain modular once they are installed. This allows for easy access to the underlying waterproofing system. Roof repairs are inevitable at some point along the life of the roofing materials. The advantage of being able to easily access the roof saves the cost of having to also repair the area of vegetation that must be disturbed to access the roof. GreenGrid modules can be removed, set aside, and replaced once repairs are made.

Added Stormwater Retention

GreenGrid is the perfect solution for municipal requirements to incorporate Best Management Practice (BMP) and Low Impact Development (LID) into your development. The use of GreenGrid as a BMP allows the developer to reduce the impact the building will have on the total impervious surface of the site. This reduction leads to smaller collection pipes, channels, and detention facilities.
A reduction in impervious surface is not the only advantage that GreenGrid offers when considering its stormwater management advantages over conventional roofing. The modular system, with the presence of vegetation for evapo-transpiration and porous media with available storage, offers a volumetric reduction in total stormwater leaving the roof drains, resulting in lower volumes and flows entering the collection system.

GreenGrid provides for a “rougher” runoff surface than conventional roofing. This “rougher” surface increases the total time it takes for peak flows to develop from the roof, thereby attenuating the peak flow through the total development. This reduction in the peak flow allows the developer to install smaller pipes and conveyance channels.

Zero Edge

GreenGrid's new modules feature a zero-edge design rather than the thick noticeable edges of previous versions of GreenGrid. This feature adds to the aesthetic quality of the GreenGrid system. Module lines are invisible underneath the vegetation of the vegetative green roof.

Design Flexibility

The GreenGrid system is available in three depths (shallow—4-inch; intermediate—6-inch; and maximum—8-inch) to accommodate a variety of design goals. The system is based on a 2-ft x 2-ft square yet modules can be customized to fit odd dimensions, angles, or arching spaces. Furthermore, the various GreenGrid depths can be incorporated into the same design to create beautiful vistas with ample diversity. The GreenGrid can provide the flexibility and versatility to make every vegetative green roof project a unique experience.

“Rooftop Garden” approach requires a reasonable depth of soil (6-inch or 8-inch depths) to grow larger conventional perennials and grasses, or native forbs and grasses. Rooftop-garden green roofs are considered "intensive" because they generally require a lot of labor to maintain their park-like design. Most will require irrigation systems, fertilization, and other horticultural care to maintain the garden design. Intensive roofs are accessible and often include areas of hardscape, structures, and other features that create beautiful gardens on the roof.

Pre-Vegetated Aesthetics

A pre-vegetated GreenGrid vegetative green roof system can meet plant coverage specifications up to 95%. Modules are grown out at our partner nurseries in accordance with your specifications, delivered to the job site, and installed for an instant mature green roof. In addition to the instant aesthetic appeal, grown-out modules provide other functional benefits: A mature green roof is less susceptible to weed encroachment, and mature vegetation helps protect the growth media from potential wind scour and water erosion. This translates to a successful green roof with less maintenance.

Simple Installation

GreenGrid system installation is simple, effective, and attractive! Simple—the GreenGrid system is assembled and maintained at one of our partner nurseries until ready for installation. Modules arrive at the project site pre-vegetated and are simply hoisted to the roof for installation. Effective—installing mature pre-vegetated GreenGrid modules leads to an instant vegetative “green” roof. Attractive—since GreenGrid modules arrive to the project pre-vegetated ready for installation, the idea of instant aesthetics is complete with the GreenGrid system.
