Press Release: WESTON® Donates GreenGrid® Green
Roof Materials to Support Three Colleges Competing
in U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar
Decathlon
Chicago, IL — Oct.
6, 2005 — Weston
Solutions, Inc. (WESTON®) announced today that
it has donated GreenGrid® products
to three universities competing in the U.S.
Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon,
to be held Oct. 6 through 16, 2005, in Washington,
D.C.
The Solar Decathlon brings
18 college and university teams from around
the globe together to compete in designing
and building houses that demonstrate a solar
lifestyle. Knowing that the homes must be powered
by the sun, students look for ways to ensure
that their houses are working at the most energy
efficient levels.
Cornell University, the University
of Texas at Austin, and Washington State
University will incorporate WESTON’s GreenGrid® system,
creating easy-to-install green roofs into
their solar home designs.
GreenGrid® technology,
unveiled in 2001 by WESTON and American Builders
and Contractors Supply Co., Inc. (ABC Supply),
offers a flexible, modular design that quickly
transforms an unattractive roof into a beautiful,
energy-efficient rooftop garden. Modules
are composed of recycled plastic and can
be placed directly on the roofing membrane
of a building, provided structural capacity
is present. Due to their insulating properties,
green roofs have been shown to reduce heating
and cooling costs by 25 to 50 percent. They
also significantly slow a building’s
heat gain and loss.
“When outside air temperatures
reach a level of 95 degrees Fahrenheit, rooftop
surface temperatures can be as high as 180
degrees,” said Patrick
G. McCann, WESTON’s president and chief executive officer. “By
adding a green roof, students will be able to control the temperature in
the solar houses with less energy, creating efficiencies beyond many of
their competitors. WESTON is proud to contribute to the ingenuity and creativity
of these future scientists and environmental engineers. We applaud their
efforts.”
WESTON has successfully marketed
the GreenGrid® green
roof technology to federal, state and local government groups and private
industry throughout the United States. In addition to reduced energy
costs, GreenGrid® systems
add natural beauty, reduce stormwater runoff and extend roof life.
Check with your state department of environment
to learn more about green roof incentives in
your area, including LEED® credit for stormwater
runoff, energy, rapidly renewable materials,
urban heat island, recycling, and regional
materials.
