“Making
Green Roofs Simple” – by Jared
Markham and Todd Walles – Featured
in Environmental Design and Construction Magazine
Jared Markham and Todd Walles,
both of Weston Solutions, Inc., are specialists
in green building solutions and co-authored
the article “Making Green Roofs Simple” which
was featured in Environmental Design and
Construction magazine.
In the article, Jared and Todd
knowledgably educate readers about the history
and benefits of green roofs (environmentally
friendly roofs that feature substantial amounts
of vegetation), and the green roof technologies
available to today’s wise and environmentally
responsible consumers. The article also compared
the traditional layered or built-in-place green
roof technology with a newer, modular technology
offered by WESTON called GreenGrid®.
GreenGrid® offers
advantages over other green roof technologies
because the system is made up of lightweight,
moveable trays that are pre-grown in greenhouses,
offering clients the ease of choosing the plants
they wish to incorporate on their roofs and
having them quickly installed in sections.
Green roofs are quickly gaining
popularity in North America, mostly because
they provide environmental and economic benefits
such as combating the urban “heat island” effect,
detaining stormwater, reducing host building
energy consumption and noise levels, and extending
the life of the roof. Building owners also
capitalize on the technology because green
roofs enhance the urban landscape by adding
beauty to the traditional drab concrete or
stone rooftops we have always been used to.
